Problem Statement

Lack of support for Caregivers of Persons with Intellectual Disability

Caregivers of Persons with Intellectual Disability Face a Myriad of Challenges in Taking Care of Their Charges. The lack of knowledge and skills in caring, lack of awareness of schemes and where to go for help and lack of support are amongst some challenges currently faced by caregivers of persons with intellectual disability.

Solution

Providing Caregivers with Direct Comprehensive Support Services

Caregivers can expect to receive the following support services via a hub-and-spoke model at the main centre and also at the various sites where their children with disabilities are receiving services:

• Information and referral services;
• Emotional & Social Support (e.g. counselling and networking services);
• Financial support (e.g. financial planning services);
• Care Support (e.g. referral for respite care, training and residential services);
• Building of caregivers’ capabilities (e.g. workshops, seminars and training camps);
• Conduct research on caregiving and other related matters;
• Caregivers Support Initiative: A committee to be formed in each of MINDS’ service centres to plan and deliver a programme of activities and capability development for caregivers.

Outcomes

Caregivers of persons with intellectual disability will be able to access essential caregiving services, training and programmes to equip them with better caregiving skills and sustain them in the caregiving journey.
